UPOS
Universidad Pablo de Olavide
Objective:
1) Processing UPOS herbarium specimens of collections from critical places (South Africa, South America and New Zealand).
2) Improving conservation of extant critical vouchers, by fixing poorly preserved specimens and storage.
3) Maintenance of UPOS collection using products and systems for pest control.
Timetable:
We plan to conduct our project to improve the collection in four steps once the grant received. The time allotted for each step is an estimation that takes into account the limited human resources available (only one technician) at UPOS herbarium.
1) Purchase of the material (folders, glue, paper, specialized boxes and pest products) Up to 2 months.
2) Processing of unmounted specimens. Assembly of sheets in folders and replacement of damaged elements of previously mounted sheets. About 12 months.
3) Include the processed sheets in die-cut boxes by species family. About 18 months.
4) Pest control in the UPOS herbarium collection, using the insecticides. 2 times per year. Pheromone traps will be use in the herbarium to detect possible pests. Furthermore, the technician will place insect repellent in each box to prevent the appearance of insects that could cause damage to the collection. About 3 months.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
The herbarium of Pablo de Olavide University (UPOS) is a small and relatively recent herbarium which was founded in 2002. Its collections are characterized by a high taxonomic specialization in family Cyperaceae, since this is the research lineage of most members in the Botany Area of the University. Therefore, although the total number of specimens at UPOS is relatively low (c. 18000), it is probably among the 5-10 largest Cyperaceae collection worldwide (c. 5000 specimens). Specimens have been steadily incorporated since its foundation through collecting by members of the Botany area or by exchange with other herbaria and scientific collaborators.
We plan to use the requested grant to acquire material to improve the sheets of UPOS physical collection, get high-quality storage system and prevents pest in the future. This will be conducted by the herbarium technical staff. We will make these improvements available by others herbariums, and will also use it to build an complete collection of Cyperaceae that currently is in process. There quite a few unmounted specimens. In respect of to the acquisition to the specialized boxes, we will achieve an optimal and higher quality storage system for the sheets. For the conservation and preservation of the collection, the technician will establish a pest control system using total discharge insecticides, insect repelent inside the boxes and pheromone traps inside the herbarium.
