Department of Plant Biology and Ecology

Objective:

The project aim to work with the National herbarium of Madagascar and
- Digitize herbaria of endemic species and establishing a database.
- Digitize herbaria collected in cities and establish an online database.
- Making botanical and plants evolution research easier with data availability.
The project aim to work with the department of Plant Biology and Ecology of the University of Antananarivo and
- Improve capacity of students in botany to manage specimens using BRAHMS software.

Timetable:

For the project, we planify a work for 5 persons for 6 months (ie. 24 weeks).

We will start by the training of master students for the use of BRAHMS software in the department of plant biology and Ecology of the University of Antananarivo for one week. We will work with the Department responsible who will be our trainer.
After that, with 4 students of the department, herbaria selection will be done in 8 weeks respectively 5 weeks for the selection and sorting of endemic species herbaria and 3 weeks for the selection and sorting of urban specimens. This second step will be carry out in the National Herbarium (TAN) and we will work with the flora Department responsible.
Digitization will be done on 7 weeks for the both (Endemic and urban flora) in the National herbarium. We preview to digitalize about 200 herbaria per day.
Searching first publication and description of the herbaria digitized will take us 4 weeks (we estimate 50 publication per person per day), Bibliography management will be with mendeley desktop software.
As for the database establishment and finalisation, we plan two weeks and for the website manipulation and putting the data online plan two other weeks.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

This proposal scores:

/40

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

National herbarium of Madagascar (https://www.madbryo.org/tan-herbarium) contain approximatively 265.000 specimens all around the Island and alsmost all specimens of endemic species. However, the investigation in Cities are not known but actually, the urban flora need a review because it's relevant for plant evolution, adaptation and naturalization process.
Firstly, with students from the department of Plant Biology and Ecology of the university of Antananarivo we will work in the herbarium and select all herbaria of endemic and urban species (all taxa) by manipulate herbaria with care. Then, we will classify the herbaria and take note the specimens who need to be recollected or reviewed.
After that, we’ll digitize with scanner and computer the specimens selected.
Also, we will list the herbaria present and research the publication and first description by the author of the species (if possible) to make it available with the physic scanned specimen. A database will be established using BRAHMS software. For this project, we will by one year BRAHMS License.
Finally, by using google, we will create a secure website for researchers on the flora evolution and taxonomy for all specimen digitized in the herbarium of Madagascar TAN. And we will (with permission of the responsible of the herbarium) put in the data of all digitized herbaria and information about species on line.
