Objective:
This project general aim is to promote and develop the digitization of the Ruiz Leal Herbarium (MERL) collection to make information on its specimens accessible through open data portals on biodiversity (GBIF/SNDB-Argentina) and other regional databases (http://www.floraargentina.edu.ar). Its central purpose is to update and digitize the collection of vascular plant types preserved at MERL and to incorporate and digitize collections recently donated to the herbarium, resulting from studies and research in the biogeographic regions of the High Andes, Payunia and Patagonia.

The MERL belongs to the Instituto Argentino de Investigaciones de las Zonas Áridas (IADIZA-CONICET). It is a reference collection of the vegetation of western Argentina and is the result of the efforts of botanists and collectors of the regional flora who have worked from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. It shelters collections of the flora of Mendoza and Argentina, such as those of A. Ruiz Leal and F.A. Roig, to which more recent collections from other researchers and institutions have been added. Currently, the MERL preserves about 80,000 specimens and about 400 types. Information on some of its specimens is shared through the Flora del Conosur (IBODA-CONICET) and the GBIF-SNDB portals. The collection is only partially inventoried (70%) and digitized (10%). In order to improve the process of digitization and publication of MERL data, it is necessary to update the computer and information storage equipment. To achieve this project objectives: a) type collection will be revised to update and digitize the information on its specimens; b) the incorporation to the herbarium, the inventory and digitization of the specimens (10,000) from collections in the High Andes, Payunia and Patagonia will be initiated. The information on the specimens will be recorded from field notebooks and labels, following the metadata structure and fields required according to SNDB quality standards. The publication of data will be done according to GBIF-SNDB/ (IPT/DWC) protocols.
