HSESJ
Saile Echegaray Provincial Herbarium - Institute and Museum of Natural Sciences - Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences - National University of San Juan
Objective:
1- Enhance the physical condition of specimens in the Herbarium collection.
2- Standardize the collection database with the criteria of the Darwin Core protocol.
3. Update the nomenclature of the specimens, according to the APGIV classification system.
4- Launch the image bank of the specimens, facilitating digital access and long-term preservation of the collection.
5- Upload data to the GBIF platform, to allow open access to the physical collection.
6- To promote in local educational institutions the importance of the herbarium as a custodian of local plant heritage.
Timetable:
Specimen review and physical improvement (1): Months 1 to 11
Database standardization according to the Darwin Core protocol (2): Month 1 - 2
Nomenclature update according to APG IV standards (3): Months 2 to 6
Digital imaging for priority groups (Obj. 4): Months 3 to 11
Data upload to GBIF (5): Month 7 to 10
Talks, workshops and guided tours for outreach (6): Months 3 to 5; 8 to 10
Final review, adjustments, and report: Month 12
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
āā
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
ā
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
ā
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
Currently, the HSESJ holds 60% of its specimens unprocessed and no datasets have yet been uploaded for remote access to the collection. To process this material, it is necessary to add interns dedicated to the different work stations of the herbarium.
Training will be provided to the team on taxonomic identification according to the APG IV classification system, mounting, data entry, digital imaging of specimens, and publication of biodiversity data. This will be supported by the GBIF Argentina Node and the Argentine Herbaria Network (Argentine Botanical Society).
The physical condition of the specimens in the collection will be improved following best mounting practices, using acid-free papers and inks. Unprocessed backlog samples will be mounted, labeled, and cured.
A priority group of specimens will be selected for starting with digital imaging. To obtain images, the HSESJ has a custom-made light box and the training to store these images on Wikispace. However, photographic equipment that meets the required digital photography standards is necessary.
The corresponding dataset will be published on the GBIF platform, using the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT).
In the short term, preference will be given to endemic taxa, those from protected areas, or those with some degree of vulnerability, although the long-term goal is to process and upload the entire HSESJ database.
Finally, lectures and workshops on native plants are expected to be offered for all educational level
