“Collection and Herbarium Curation of Selected Agriculturally Important Highland Taxa in Peninsular Malaysia”

Malaysia

Conserve, Other

Cost (USD):

2000

MDI

Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI)

Objective:

The main aim of this proposed project is to increase available herbarium specimen collection and enhance the capacity of MDI Herbarium to undertake taxonomic research and mapping for taxa within selected highland areas.

Objective(s)
1. To collect and record morphological (compulsory) and anatomy (if necessary) traits for one hundred (100) specimens of agriculturally important highland taxa in Peninsular Malaysia.
2. To prepare and curate herbarium specimens of agriculturally important highland taxa while establishing their compulsory herbarium collections.

Timetable:

Your timetable (1000 characters)

1. Conducting research survey, secondary data from previous Herbarium collections (Kew online, KEP, UKMB) and site surveys : (February 2020 – Mar 2020)
2. Site evaluation of the previous collection, exploration planning and data gathering : (April 2020)
3. Exploration in the rainforest from targeted highlands to collect the specimens : (Mar 2020 -October 2020) : (4 field trips)
4. Collected herbarium specimens preparation, curation and digitalisation : (November 2020 – February 2021)

Project Team Members:
1. Mohd Norfaizal Ghazalli
2. Amin Asyraf Tamizi
3. Anuar Rasyidi Mohd Nordin
4. Mr. Dome Nikong
5. Muhammad Ikhwanuddin Mat Esa

Targeted Highland Areas:
East Cost part of Peninsular Malaysia

Recommendations to further this curation work are:
1. Families to remain ordered alphabetically, however a specific classification for family and genera needs to be adopted;
2. APG III is suggested as the system for angiosperms, as primary references for family and genera names;
3. The tropical plant database being created as part of this project can be used to generate a comprehensive index of accepted names and synonyms for all specimens.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

This proposal scores:

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

This project will determine the distribution and collect herbarium specimens of agriculturally-related species and their wild relatives in Malaysian highland habitats by conducting collection trips in forest reserves. The collected specimens of agriculturally related specimens will be characterised using their morphology traits. Plant genetic resources represent the essential base for agricultural systematic will be conserved as the preliminary materials for the agriculture discipline study. The collection trip will be carried out in East Coast part of Peninsular Malaysia. In order to meet the adequate study materials, a total of at least 100 herbarium specimens of agricultural wild relatives will be collected and their morphological characterisation and evaluation will be conducted. Voucher specimens as well as type (if available) of the species will be collected and kept in MDI herbarium for future references, and will be replicated at other herbaria in Malaysia - KEP and UKMB. Genus and species folders will be curated by updating names on folder covers in pencil; genera will be placed into separate genus covers, and species will be put into separate species covers. Determinations on all specimens will be checked against species names and specimens. Specimens curation process at MDI Herbarium will be logged in the project’s plant specimen database (AGROBIS). Full data capture will be performed for novel/new specimens only if the specimen was a type.
