Objective:

Digitization, maintenance, restoration and dissemination to the public of the historical collection of the, comprising 4,000 cards. Among the samples in the Pabst collection is the type specimen of Orchidaceae brasiliensis. The collection, which consists of sheets and cards and accompanying notes, illustrations, photographs, and taxonomical information, constitutes an important resource at the HB. Currently, the collection can only be consulted by visiting the herbarium in person.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

Created in 1958, the Pabst collection was hosted at a number of institutions before being permanently housed at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 2013. Unfortunately, these moves and declining public investment in biological collections threaten the preservation of its materials.

The proposed work will consist of:
- the restoration of herbarium sheets and cards;
- clean-up of accompanying documentation;
- the digitization of files;
- making the collection available via the jabot database (http://hb.jbrj.gov.br/v2/consulta.php) and CRIA - specieslink (https://specieslink.net/);
- maintenance, standardization, and digitization of Bradeanum Herbarium type specimens, and dissemination of images and data in free online databases.

The institutional partnerships to facilitate this work are already in place. The digitization team will be trained by the staff of the Reflora project and will follow best practices for digitization of herbarium collections (Thiers et al., 2016; Hidalga et al., 2020; Gasper et al., 2021). A partnership will be established with the UERJ Library and their respective laboratories for the analysis of herbarium sheets and files. The material will be photographed with a camera in a studio for scanning specimens. Images and metadata will be organized and made available through a HB database.
