Systematization and Digitalization of specimens of Catatumbo Sarare Herbarium (HECASA): Protecting the Biological Bi-national treasure of The Andes

Colombia

Database, Digitally image

Cost (USD):

2000

HECASA

University of Pamplona

Objective:

Systematize in the DarwinCore standard and publish online (SIB Colombia and GBIF) 2000 plant specimens of the Catatumbo Sarare Herbarium.

Perform a curatorship and taxonomic verification of the systematized plants specimens of the HECASA Herbarium before the digitalization.

Digitalize at least 1000 specimens of plants in pictures of high resolution to start the virtual Catatumbo Sarare Herbarium for scientific and general community.

Timetable:

The process will take place over four months. The first two months will be dedicated to systematizing in the Darwin core standard and perform a curatorship and nomenclatural verification of the 2000 specimens of vascular plants from different localities and ecosystems of the region. The next two months will be dedicated to digitalization of 1000 mounted specimens of the collection and upload in the web portal of the herbarium on University of Pamplona web hosting.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

The HECASA Herbarium is one of the most important plant collections of the Colombian northwestern. It owns specimens collected since the 80s from several projects and explorations of poorly known localities from the region. The herbarium has approximately 22000 specimens and was officially created in 2002. The herbarium owns six type specimens and registers of endemic and sometimes endangered species from the Colombia - Venezuela frontier. However, the funding for maintenance has had always limited, additionally, the staff working in the herbarium is scarce and more labor is required to process the accumulated material, systematize and digitize the specimens. Then, this grant will contribute to increasing the database (2000 registers) and the digital repository of images of specimens (1000 pictures) to publish all this invaluable information online and the Herbarium achieves more diffusion in the world. The budget will be destined to buy materials (for physic curatorship), equipment (for digitalizing the specimens), and hiring staff to do the activities needed for the improvement of the botanical collection (systematize, digitalize and publish the specimens). It is expected that at the end of this process there will be a preliminary web portal of the herbarium on University of Pamplona web hosting.
