Digitization of data and images from DIAM, the herbarium located in the Espinhaço Range, Brazil
Brazil
Database, Digitally image, Process backlog, Ship
Cost (USD):

DIAM
Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri
Objective:
The DIAM collection is an important reference for the rich and diverse regional phanerogamic flora, including numerous rare and endemic specimens of the Espinhaço Range, Brazil. The herbarium is online at SpeciesLink, but there are no images available, nor is there a computerized system with barcodes. Therefore, the main objectives are:
1. Digitation and imaging specimens.
2. Processing of new specimens collected in remote and understudied sites at the Espinhaço Range.
3. Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria.
4. Outreach of herbarium projects on social media.
Timetable:
In the first two months, we intend to purchase and install the equipment. In the third month, we will train the students to digitize the specimens. In the following two months, we intend to digitize all the data from the materials that are already in the DIAM collection and make them available on the SpeciesLink platform. In the coming months, we will photograph key specimens and make their images available online. Along with this process, we intend to give visibility to the work and the DIAM collection by publicizing the collection and the species sampled and their conservation on social media and other platforms.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
The collection currently has around 10,500 specimens, but 7,500 are available online, and without images. We intend to digitize the rest of the collection with the help of scholarship holders from ongoing projects. To do this, we need a good computer exclusively for the herbarium, since we currently use a shared computer for other activities. The camera and a photographic station to capture imagens of the specimens are being acquired with resources from an ongoing research project (“Herbarium network filling knowledge gaps: inventories and compilation of plant diversity in neglected environmental relicts in mountains and highlands, Minas Gerais,” supported by FAPEMIG).
With the equipment set up and staff and students working, we estimate the collection will be digitized in 2 months.
After that, we intend to select samples of rare species, types, endemic species, and species known from few samples to begin capturing and making the images available. Newly collected specimens from remote and understudied locations in the Espinhaço Range, gathered from ongoing projects, will be processed and added to the collection. Their images and data will also be made accessible online. We will also share important duplicates with other herbaria.
We will highlight the herbarium and the importance of the scientific collection on social networks and other media.
