Filling the knowledge and plant collection gaps in the Espinhaço Range Biosphere Reserve in Brazil

Brasil

Cost (USD):

2000

HDJF

Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri

Objective:

HDJF is a small collection, but with an important mission, to document and store specimens of the flora of a unique region. Espinhaço Range represents less than 1% of Brazil, however, according to recent estimates, it accounts for 21% of all plant species. Despite having been visited by several naturalists and researchers since the 19th century, there are still unexplored territories. In this sense, our proposal is: (1) to digitize and make the entire collection available; (2) send duplicates to other herbariums; and (3) carry out botanical collections in neglected or undersampled locations.

Timetable:

i) Access to databases and preparation of maps with gaps (1 month);
ii) Field campaigns (every 15 days for 8 months);
iii) Identification and herborization of the material (continued for 9 months);
iv) Scanning of samples (continuous for 9 months);
v) Sending duplicates to other herbariums (1 month);
vi) Elaboration of publications and reports (2 months).

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

The biological, geomorphological, historical and social singularity justified the creation of the Espinhaço Range Biosphere Reserve. Although only a small number of areas have been intensively inventoried, it is estimated that there are approximately 9,000 species of plants, and that 30% of the taxa are endemic. So we aim to fill in the gaps, collecting and making inventories in the “gaps” of information. To this end, we will expand the registration of field and exsiccate images, and later they will be made available in a database (GBIF, SiBBr, speciesLink and IdigBio). We will send duplicates to other herbaria and specialists in order to confirm identifications. Based on available online databases, we will prepare maps with geographic location of undersampled and / or neglected locations, which will be the focus of our expeditions for collections and inventories. Based on these actions, we will prepare identification manuals that will enable the sustainable use of the rich regional flora.
