The Rapinat Herbarium (RHT) and Centre for Molecular Systematics, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli¬ - 620 002, Tamil Nadu
Objective:
To increase the collection of vascular cryptogams and also process the backlog specimens
preserved at RHT.
To improve the living collection of endemic and threatened plants at the RHT conservatory.
To empower the Post Graduate students of our College in the conservation of vascular cryptogams
and endemic, threatened flowering plants.
Timetable:
Work Plan/Time Table
During the first six months of the research project, an extensive and intensive field survey will be conducted in the proposed study region (Tamil Nadu) in order to collect live specimens of vascular cryptogams, as well as endemic and threatened flowering plants for the herbarium and conservatory. In addition to the processing of collected and backlog specimens, the field survey will be continued for the next six months. During the last six months, processing of specimens, publication of articles, hands-on training for the research scholars and Post graduate students of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli and other state universities of Tamil Nadu, India, and the preparation of report will be done.
S. No Duration Proposed Work
1 I - VI Collection and documentation of plant species
2 VII - XII Collection, documentation and processing of backlog specimens
3 XIII - XVIII Processing of specimens, hands-on training, publication of articles
and the preparation of report
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.
This proposal scores:
/120
Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Description of the Problem
The Rapinat Herbarium Tiruchirappalli (RHT) is one of the oldest herbaria in South India, housing a vast number of flowering plant collections from Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, Carnatic, Coromandel Coast and interior plains of Tamil Nadu, India. Along with this, the RHT conservatory was established in 1993 to conserve 458 species under 282 genera of this region which includes more than 25 endemic and threatened plants. Nevertheless, a very few vascular cryptogams collections have been done from these regions. Also, good many of the specimens collected for the Herbarium remain unprocessed due to financial issues and man power constrains. This grant would help to promote the collection of vascular cryptogams as well as conserve the rare, endemic, and endangered flowering plants and also process the preserved specimens at RHT. We are planning to train the Post-graduate students of our College and get their assistance for the purpose of processing the specimens that would give them an opportunity to have hands-on training about the field taxonomy, systematic botany, and herbarium management. The herbarium collection and the live conservatory would ensure the conservation of the rich diversity of the region and would be a great benefit to the future generation.
