Cost: $

2000

SAF

Department of Agricultural, Food and Forest Sciences, University of Palermo

Objective:

The SAF Herbarium , recently funded, is mainly oriented towards the conservation of macrofungi of the Mediterranean Area and also hosts collections of vascular plants. Actually the herbarium hosts ca. 7000 specimens which are temporarely recorded on paper support. The proposal is to start the digitalization of herbarium samples in order to facilitate the access by academics and common citizens.

Plan:

For the purpose given above we will buy a personal computer and the informatization will be carried out on a relational DB according to the TDWG standards in order to be ready to be included in larger systems (e.g. GBIF). The informatization process will be done in collaboration with an external personnel unit that will be granted and trained. A small amount of the funding requested will be used to buy Mounting papers.

Timetable:

The deadline of this process is 12 months.
The training of the external personnel will be done in the first month. During months 2-12, the personnel of the Department in collaboration with the external unit will carry on the digitalization of herbarium labels.
