Objective:
The operation of HUNI requires a financial contribution that UNIRIO does not provide. HUNI needs to maintain its collection to provide quality services like other herbariums of Brazilian public universities. Since HUNI has no physical space to install a digitizer station, we have been invited to scan our collection in National Museum Herbarium (R). The collection room is not suitable for storing and conserving samples in ideal conditions. This project aims to improve these conditions regarding the storage of samples and enable HUNI to flow continuously in receiving and assembling samples.
Timetable:
- March: announcement of UNIRIO's notice and IAPT's awarded projects
- March/April/May: acquisition of the items listed above (plastic organizer boxes, rubber-capped glass vials, film installation for retention of sunlight and heat, printer and toner, barcode scanner, external hard drive, computer, mini photographic studio, styrofoam glue, black pepper)
- April/May/June: Assembly of about 300 exsiccates of vascular aquatic plants and organization of collection room with purchased items
- May/June/July/August: scheduling for training and obtaining images in the Herbarium of the National Museum (R)
- June/July/August/September: availability of images on online platforms (JABOT and SpLink)
- September/October: availability of images on online platforms (JABOT and SpLink) and participation in the UNIRIO academic integration week, announcing the objectives achieved in the project
- November/December: finalization of project and activities report montage

Plan:
- Submission of a proposal to the UNIRIO extension activities notice, to obtain a scholarship for a trainee.
- Assembly of about 300 exsiccates of vascular aquatic plants, already inserted in the collection,
- Transportation of the exsiccates to obtain images in the Herbarium of the National Museum (R). As the HUNI collection is still small, it is expected to finish scanning quickly.
- Restructuring of the organization of exsiccates and vegetal samples in liquid medium in a larger number of plastic organizer boxes.
- Replacement of rubber-capped glass vials (where samples of vascular aquatic plants are stored in liquid medium) by plastic vials, which promote lower evaporation rate.
- Film installation for retention sunlight and heat in the collection room windows.
- Acquisition of a printer and toner for label and document printing (current printer is broken).
- Acquisition of a barcode scanner, external hard drive and computer with high storage capacity (the current one has no storage capacity compatible with the proposed objectives).
- Acquisition of items for assembling a mini photographic studio to obtain images of non-compressed material (in liquid medium or samples of bryophyte) to enhance the use of a LEICA magnifying glass with a camera that is already being used to capture bryophyte images.
- Acquisition of sewing thread and Styrofoam Glue (Polyvinyl Acetate and Alcohol) for label bonding.
- Acquisition of black pepper as a substitute for mothballs, which is toxic.
