LWKS

Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians, National Academy of Ukraine

Objective:

The project objectives are: 1) to improve the pest control system in the herbarium by purchasing a large freezer; 2) to provide a modern system for storing electronic database information and photos of specimens by purchasing a NAS (Network Access Server) for 4 hard drives and 4 TB disks; 3) to start preparing a dataset for incorporation into the GBIF through the national biodiversity platform UkrBIN.

Timetable:

1. January-February 2021 - purchase of a freezer (https://f.ua/liebherr/gt-6122.html).
2. February 2021 - installation of a freezer, connection and start-up.
3. February 2021 - purchase of NAS (Network Access Server) AgeStar 3C4B3A1 and 3 3.5 "4TB WD hard drives (WD40EZRZ).
4. February-November 2021 – preparation of electronic records for inclusion in the database at the estimate rate of 35 records per working day, respectively 7500: 35: 22: (working days per month) = approximately 10 months.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

1. Improvements in pest control systems in herbarium will be implemented through the purchasing of a freezer (Liebherr GT 6122 for $ 795), which will allow to quickly freeze up the plant specimens for pest control. The freezer of the chosen type allows to freeze herbarium material at a temperature up to -32⁰ C. The freezer will be purchased in a retail trade shop network and installed in a special room of the herbarium, which is designed for processing materials against pests.
2. Providing a modern system for storing electronic database information and digitized herbarium specimens will be achieved by purchasing an external storage system for 4 hard drives. The NAS (Network Access Server) AgeStar 3C4B3A1 for $ 135 and 3 hard drives 3.5 "4TB WD (WD40EZRZ) for $ 320 will be purchased to store an electronic database of herbarium and digitized specimens and facilitate to the analysis of the distribution of species in the space and time critical for current and future research relating to global biodiversity, ets.
3. To provide additional capacity of electronic information for following inclusion in the GBIF through the National Biodiversity Platform UkrBIN, the set of total amount 7,500 information records from the LWKS will be prepared. At the estimate rate of $ 0.1 per one record preparation ($ 750 in total).
