Objective:

The aim of the project is to increase the research accessibility and the quality of conservation of the unique mycological collection funds of M.G. Popov Herbarium (NSK). The mycological herbarium includes several collections of fungi (aphyllophoroid, agaricoid, gastrooid) and myxomycetes collected from the large territory of Western and Eastern Siberia (Altai Territory, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Irkutsk Regions, Altai, Khakassia, Tyva, Buryatia Republics), including hard-to-reach areas. This herbarium is of high scientific importance, since it represents most of the mycobiota of Siberia.

Timetable:

April-May 2020: revision of the NSK mycological herbarium collection, selection of well-preserved fungi and myxomycete specimens for which there is data on the location, habitats and substrate; June-November 2020: Packing samples in separate zip packages, printing barcodes, assigning numbers to samples, converting data from herbar labels into electronic format in Excel spreadsheets. In general, we will process and deposit at least 2,000 samples into the herbarium.

An audit of the NSK mycological herbarium collection will be carried out, since a certain part of it has not passed the deposit procedure in herbarium funds and is not used by specialists for scientific purposes. Fungal samples will be assigned herbarium numbers. Data from herbarium labels will be converted into electronic format and saved in Excel spreadsheets. Samples of fruit bodies of fungi will be placed in paper bags. Myxomycete specimens will be stored in matchbox corton boxes. Fungi and myxomycetes will be packed in zip packages to prevent contamination by mushroom beetles and extraneous spores. Packages with fungi and boxes with myxomycetes will be placed in cardboard boxes of various formats and put into storage in metal sliding herbarium cabinets for storage. As a result of the work, thanks to the assigned barcodes, one can refer to NSK herbarium fungal samples when used in researchers. Data from labels transfered into electronic format can later be posted on the Internet, for example, on the GBIF portal and will be available to specialists. Packing samples in separate zip packages will prevent their contamination with fungal beetles, which will contribute to their long-term preservation, as well as prevent contamination by extraneous spores, which is important when using samples in molecular genetic studies.
