Herbario Nacional de Nicaragua

Objective:

1. Digitize the information of the samples classified in the herbarium (16,574) in the SQL Database in 2021.
2. Facilitate the access of botanical information through a website available to researchers and collaborators of the herbarium, in the second half of 2020.
3. Begin the process of creating an image bank of the classified species of the national herbarium and digitize 10,000 copies in 2021.
4. Taxonomically identify 800 samples of vegetation by 2021.
5. Digitize the information of the samples classified in the herbarium (16,574) in the SQL Database in 2021.

Timetable:

Schedule january 2020-december 2021
We plant in two years 2020-2021: Digitize 16, 800 herbarium plant samples in a SQL Database. (4200 samples per semestrer).
We planned to scan 10, 000 images of our herbarium samples.( 2500 plant samples per semester).
Identify 800 plant samples (200 per Semester).
A part (gymnosperm collection 1500 herbarium plants samples )of information must to be online a second semester 2020 in our webpage.
The information of our collection of 16,574 plant herbarium samples must to be a database and online available.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Plan:

The National Herbarium hat a classified collection of 16, 574 plants. We start in 2018 an important line of work: Do a Database and support all our information. Last Month we finished the design of our website and our interface SQL: http://herbario-nacional.herokuapp.com. In both initiative, we use a demo version for work. We will to put online in 2020 a part of our information but in this moment, we do not have an available server or an available cloud. We do not have an images database of our plants herbarium classified samples, and that is an important point that we need to resolve. In addition, we will to upload a part of herbarium specimens imagines and contribute to do the information more precise about our plant collections. It is very important for the quantification and protection of vegetation samples information to have a backup of the herbalized specimens, so a scanner would be of great help to enrich the records of the database. That is why these Small collection grants is very important for us. This can we helped to finish and assemble our database. The study of vegetation and its identification is a constant task, as part of providing the herbarium with technical equipment that facilitates botanical research. We need a microscope and one camera for do our fieldworks. In summary with your financial support, we would buy the following: Scanner B5, Photographic camera, 2 years of payment for a robust cloud to upload the database information and a microscope.
