The International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) promotes scientific research and scholarship in systematics, encompassing the taxonomy and evolution of plants, fungi, and algae. To support the next generation of scholars, IAPT created the Early Career Investigator Symposium series, which highlights the work of botanists, mycologists, and phycologists at the beginning of their careers. Each year, the symposium is hosted at a different international conference where IAPT participates, with its theme tailored to complement the focus of the meeting.
At the XIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica, organized by the Red Latinoamericana de Botánica (RLB) in Habana, Cuba, the symposium theme was “Taxonomy & Systematics in Latin America.” This theme underscored the conference’s regional emphasis while showcasing cutting-edge research in systematics across the continent.
The symposium highlighted the innovative work of early-career botanists advancing taxonomy, phylogenetics, and evolutionary biology. Presentations covered phylogenetic and evolutionary studies across major clades of the plant tree of life. By bringing together researchers from diverse backgrounds and career stages, the symposium fostered opportunities for collaboration that transcend both geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
IAPT is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment where participants can share expertise, build professional networks, and establish long-lasting collaborations. By providing a platform for young scientists and promoting international exchange, IAPT reaffirms its commitment to supporting the future of systematics and strengthening the global research community.
