The Madrid Code is the new edition of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. It is based on the decisions made at the Twentieth International Botanical Congress, which met in Madrid, Spain, in July 2024. The Congress debated 447 proposals to amend the Code and accepted important new rules, including:
Establishment of a clear mechanism for the voluntary registration of names and types of algae and plants
Clarifications on the nomenclature of fossil-taxa and the removal of impediments to their typification
Creation, starting in 2026, of a mechanism for proposing rejection of new algal, fungal, and plant names that are derogatory to groups of people
Removal of a significant set of names with an epithet that was considered particularly offensive by changing the spelling to afra, afrorum, or afrum
Improving the institutional votes mechanism at the Nomenclature Section of an International Botanical Congress to enshrine the equality of institutions, no matter their size (one institution, one vote).
The Editorial Committee also made improvements to the format of the Code, with complex rules and recommendations now divided into separate clauses, as well as improvements to the clarity of the language.
This edition continues the Code’s legacy as an essential, authoritative guide for the global scientific community.
